1. Think about how you really live
Start with your daily routine. Do you entertain guests often? Do children study at home? Do you need a work-from-home corner? Design should follow your lifestyle, not the other way around.
2. Plan the layout first
Furniture placement and movement space matter more than decoration. Leave comfortable walking paths, and place the main pieces, such as the sofa, bed and dining table, before choosing smaller items.
3. Use lighting in layers
Good lighting changes a room completely. Combine soft ceiling or cove lighting for general light, focused lights for reading or cooking, and decorative lights such as a chandelier or wall lights for atmosphere.
4. Don't forget storage
Built-in wardrobes, shelves and display units keep a home tidy and make small rooms feel bigger. Plan storage from the start instead of adding loose furniture later.
5. Choose colours and materials wisely
Warm neutral colours with a few accent tones are easy to live with and age well. Pick materials such as flooring and finishes that suit your family's use, because durability and easy cleaning matter as much as appearance.
6. Set budget priorities
Spend first on what is hard to change later: electrical work, ceilings, flooring and built-in furniture. Decorative items and soft furnishings can be added gradually.
7. Time it with construction
If the house is still being built, share your interior plan with the builder early. Electrical points, ceiling heights and wall positions are far easier to set correctly before the walls are finished.
